Colonel Mark G. Kappelmann is a native of Decorah, Iowa, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Aviation Branch in 1995. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nuclear Engineering.  COL Kappelmann also holds Master’s Degrees in National Security and Strategic Studies from both the College of Naval Command and Staff and the Army War College.

 

Following flight school, he proceeded to Giebelstadt Army Airfield, Germany, and was assigned to F Company, 159th Aviation Regiment.  While assigned there, he served as a Section Leader, Assistant Operations Officer, and Flight Platoon Leader.
He also served as the G-3 (Air) for the National Support Element
in Taszar, Hungary. 

 

Upon graduation from the Aviation Captain’s Career Course, COL Kappelmann was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), Fort
Campbell, Kentucky. While assigned to 2nd Battalion, he commanded both Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) and D Company.  He also served as the Operations Officer for E Company, 160th SOAR (A) in Daegu, Republic of Korea. Following those assignments he was assigned as the Regiment Aviation Maintenance Officer and then as the Executive Officer for 1st Battalion, 160th SOAR (A).

 

Upon completion of the College of Naval Command and Staff, COL Kappelmann returned to Fort Campbell and took command of the Special Operations Aviation Training Battalion (SOATB), as part of the newly formed US Army Special Operations Aviation Command (USASOAC).  He then moved to Wiesbaden, Germany where he commanded the 1-214th Aviation Regiment and served as the Secretary of the General Staff for United States Army Europe (USAREUR).  From there he attended the Army War College.  Most recently he was the commander of the Special Mission Wing (SMW) Special Operations Advisory Group (SOAG) in Kabul, Afghanistan.

 

COL Kappelmann has deployed in support of Operations JOINT GUARD, ALLIED FORCE, JOINT GUARDIAN, ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, and FREEDOM’S SENTINEL.

COL Kappelmann’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (w/OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious ServiceMedal (w/5 OLC), Air Medal (w/Numeral 2), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (w/2 OLC), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (w/Bronze Service Star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (w/5 Bronze Service Stars), Iraq Campaign Medal (w/4 Bronze Service Stars), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal (w/2 Bronze Service Stars), Korean Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, NATO Medal (w/2 Bronze Service Stars), the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Master Army Aviator Badge, and Parachutist Badge Additionally, he has been awarded the German Cross of Honor (Silver), the German Armed Forces Parachutist  Badge (Bronze), and has been inducted into the Honorable Order of St. Michael (Bronze Award).  He is rated in theUH-1, CH-47D, MH-47E/G, MH-6M, C-12U/V, and PC-12NG.
